  • SHUSHO-E (January) - New Year's Day service.
  • HO ONKO (January) - Memorial service for Shinran Shonin, the founder of
    Jodo Shinshu Buddhism.
  • NIRVANA DAY/ BWA MEMORIAL (February) - Nirvana Day commemorates the
    passing of Sakyamuni Buddha (historical Buddha) and his passing into Pari-
    nirvana. The Buddhist Women's Association (BWA) Memorial honors members
    of the BWA who have passed away over the years.
  • SPRING HIGAN (March) - The celebration of the "spring-season-other-shore-
    gathering." One crosses from this shore of ignorance and suffering to the other
    shore of Enlightenment and peace; a chance to recall the practices of the
    Six Paramitas.
  • HANAMATSURI (April) - Celebrating the birth of Sakyamuni Buddha, the
    historical Buddha.
  • GOTAN-E (May) - Observing the birth of Shinran Shonin.
  • OBON (July/August) - An occasion to rejoice in the Enlightenment offered by
    the Buddha. Bon Odori: Gathering of Joy is the festival that occurs with this
    observance.
  • FALL HIGAN (September) - The celebration of the "autumn-season-other-shore-
    gathering." One crosses from this shore of ignorance and suffering to the other
    shore of Enlightenment and peace; a chance to recall the practices of the
    Six Paramitas.
  • EITAIKYO (November) - A perpetual memorial service dedicated to the
    memory of past Temple members.
  • BODHI DAY (December) - Commemorates Sakyamuni's transformation into a
    Buddha, perfect in Wisdom and Compassion.
  • JOYA-E (December) - Year-end service to meditate on our countless blessings.

RECOMMENDED PROCEDURES
It is a difficult time for a family with the expectancy and eventual loss of a loved one.

The Buddhist Temple of San Diego will provide spiritual guidance from its Resident Minister
during a time of grief. Guidance from the Minister and assistance from the Funeral
Committee are obligations the Temple will fulfill as it extends heartfelt condolences and
comfort to the family.

This reference guide is offered to Temple members to use in the event of a death in the family.

IMPORTANT: These guidelines are suggestions only!
Except for minimum standards that must be met in the Buddhist tradition, the bereaved
family is free to make whatever choices it wishes.

MEMORIAL SERVICES allow us to pay homage to loved ones who have passed away. In our s
death to express gratitude for and acknowledge their continuing influence in our lives. If you
wish to schedule a memorial service for a loved one, please call during weekly office
hours.        

If your loved one passed away in the year shown, the following memorial is encouraged:

The Buddha Dharma teaches us how we should live when we lose someone we love.
Therefore we should accept and appreciate the memorial service as an opportunity to
