At the Southern District Council meeting on May 13, it was reported that many
temples have decreasing membership. Buddhist Temple San Diego is holding steady with
14 new members in 2016. The Board hosted a new member breakfast on May 22 and we
enjoyed getting to know the new members a little better. Thank you to Bill and Joyce
Teague for coordinating the meet and greet.
Over Memorial Day weekend, I attended several memorial services conducted by Kenji
Sensei, Mrs. Akahoshi and I traveled to the Imperial Valley for services. In Calexico,
there were just a few headstones left as many families had their loved ones moved to
other areas. El Centro had a couple of families from the surrounding area and even a few
relatives came from Tustin and Orange County. In Brawley, we met Tim Asamen. Thank
you to Tim for taking the time to host us to lunch and for giving us a tour of the Pioneers
Park Museum. He shared many interesting facts and tidbit as we viewed the Japanese
American section at the Ethnic Galleries. If you ever get a chance, I would encourage you
to visit this museum.
On May 30, I attended the Nikkei Community Memorial Services at Mt. Hope
Cemetery. The three Japanese Churches and VFW host the gathering. Although it was
raining, it was well attended and a really nice service. One by one, we all represented our
respected group by placing a wreath in honor of all who have passed. I hope to see more
temple members there next year.
As June came, the Annual Bazaar was here and over. Our theme of Rice, was
apparent as one walked around from displays from Koda Farms and Marukan Vinegar, Eco
Sangha guess the rice game to Nancy and Katie’s rice displays with real rice growing. We
also had a demonstration of Sushi making from Sushi on a Roll. It was nice to see so many
people enjoying all the delicious foods and all the other things we have to offer. I want to
thank everyone that volunteered and supported the Temples biggest fundraiser of the
On June 18, I attended the Southern District Conference at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in
Mission Valley. Thank you to Ralph Honda and Terri Omori (Vista) for planning this event
and appreciation to all who participated. The conference was informative with
interesting Dharma talks and interactive panels.
In July and August, we are going to have two Obon events. More details to follow.
