President's Message
On April 24, I attended the Japanese Coordinating Council (JCC) luncheon with Kenji
Sensei. The event was held at the temple, and it was nice to see the Keiro kai (pioneer
club) honorees from our Sangha as well as friends for the community. There was
entertainment and our very own Sensei Akahoshi did part of his greeting in Japanese. I
hope we can get more people to attend this event next year.
I would like to promote the monthly Bingo nights co-sponsored with the VFW.
In April, the temple served up a Soft Taco Plate. Thanks go out to Mike and Carol Baker
for chairing and making the delicious dinner which included homemade pot beans and
chorizo turkey tacos. Big Thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Tsuneyoshi for making the Spanish rice. It’s
was a really relaxing evening. The guys from the VFW are such a wonderful, dedicated and
fun group. Let’s support them.
May started out with our Furniture and Houseware sale. Appreciation goes out to
Nancy Martinez, Glenn Torio, and Kaytee Sumida for chairing. We had a smaller but
energetic group helping to sort, price, set up, sell and clean up. We didn’t have a lot of
items but made over $1300. Thanks to all that supported this fundraiser. We will be looking
for rummage sale items and volunteers for the BIG rummage sale August 20-21.
For the Gotan-e activities in May, we were able to fortunate to have Rev. Nobuo Miyaji
as the guest speaker and Mrs. Miyaji from Gardena. I enjoyed getting to know them
better. They will be back in June to participate in the Southern District Conference.
As the Bazaar (June 5) approaches, we will be asking for Volunteers to help with a
variety of duties. If you can donate any time whether it is a few minutes or all day, please
let me know or call the temple at (619) 239-0896 to give your information and we will get
back to you. It will be appreciated.
