By Glenn Torio, Board President
I hope all have been enjoying their summer break! Now that the kids are
heading back to school or have been back in school for the past month, it’s
time to get back into the swing of things. Although the Temple was on break,
too, it has been a busy place. As many of you know, we celebrated the Obon
Festival at the Japanese Friendship Garden, followed by the Obon Odori at the
Organ Pavilion in Balboa Park. The festivities were in conjunction with the City of
San Diego’s yearlong Centennial Celebration of Balboa Park. It was a lot of hard
work having it off site, but ended up being a successful event. Many THANK
YOU’S go out to all that organized and helped throughout the weekend and
days leading up to Obon; this includes our Sangha and Japanese Friendship
Garden folks. We have yet to decide on next year’s Obon. If you have any
thoughts or comments, bring them by the Temple office, or tell a board
member. Another event we had was the Rummage Sale. More THANK YOU’S
go to all that helped with this fundraiser.
Kenji Sensei is entering his third year as our Resident Minister, along with Mrs.
Karen, who is very active herself. Time does fly by when you’re having fun! We
are fortunate to have the opportunity to hear the Buddha Dharma from a
different perspective and presentation.
A little after four years as our Temple Secretary, Jamie came upon an
opportunity to start a career, and has accepted it. As everyone knows, she
actually runs the whole temple, and losing her will be a great loss! Over the
years, she has raised the bar quite high for a replacement of the same stature,
competence and experience. Of course we all want the best for Jamie and her
future, so stop by the temple and give her your best wishes. Don’t worry, she will
continue to participate in Dharma School and other temple activities as usual.
