50/50 RAFFLE TIX ARE $20 THIS YEAR

Board members are now selling tickets for
the annual 50/50 drawing fundraiser. The
lucky winner will take home half of the total
proceeds (potentially a $5,000 prize) from
ticket sales. The other half will help the
temple fund its daily operations.
This year, the donation for the drawing is
just $20 per ticket. Only 500 tickets have
been printed, so depending on total sales,
each purchase has at least a one-in-500
chance of being the winning ticket!
Raffle chair is Ken Muraoka with the
assistance of Steve Marx and Nancy
Martinez. Sales will continue until
March 27,
2010,
during the BTSD/VFW Bingo Night
halftime.

KIKU GARDENS FRIDAY LUNCH

The temple hosted the weekly Kiku Garden
Senior Lunch Program on Friday, Feb. 26. We
thank Nancy Martinez and Karen Okuhara for
coordinating the luncheon and to the
temple volunteers who helped out.
Lunch is served at Kiku Gardens each
Friday from 12 noon. Donation is $3 for a very
delicious lunch, served by various commu-
nity organizations on a rotational basis. The
temple’s next opportunity to host the
luncheon will be April 16.
We can always use help in preparing
these meals when it is our turn to do so. If
you are free on a Friday morning the temple
is serving lunch, please leave a message in
the office for Ruth Voorhies who is
coordinating the BTSD lunches.

2009 YEAR-END TAX STATEMENTS

Last Month, the temple issued 2009 year-
end statements to anyone who made a
contribution to the temple. The statements
include all taxable donations made to the
temple. It does not include donations
directed to affiliated organizations.
       The statements were generated through
the Quickbooks software system that the
treasurer’s group has been implementing.
The adoption of this electronic method of
accounting assures a more efficient form of
recordkeeping for both the temple and its
donors.
If you any questions or find
discrepancies in your statement, please call
the office and leave a message for our
treasurer.
BEC LECTURE:
Annon (Peace and Tranquility)
in Hectic Times

Saturday, March 13, at 7 p.m. our guest
speaker Rev. William Chugan Briones of the
Nishi Hongwanji Los Angeles, will provide
examples from Buddhist history and
personal experience on how we can
discover reserves of peace and tranquility
in the midst of this hectic life. Rev. Briones,
a popular speaker in the Southern District,
will explore at the opportunities we have
for experiencing peace and tranquility in
our Jodo Shinshu tradition.
Annon will be a major theme for the
member temples of the Buddhist Churches
of America throughout 2010, and Briones
Sensei will be providing our first in-depth
Dharma talk on the topic.
The lecture will be held in the Sangha
Hall, the one-story building off the Buddhist
temple parking lot, in an informal
presenta-tion allowing for dialog and
questions and answers. Attendees will also
receive a complimentary copy of one of
the books in the 108 Jodo Shinshu
meditations series. Light refreshments will
be served.
The lecture is free and open to the
public and is expected to last some 90
minutes.
